“As
toddlers become preschoolers, they begin to develop self-awareness
and to explore different ways to represent their experiences
symbolically – through language, art, music, movement, games, and
other forms of expression” (British Columbia Early Learning
Framework).
Some
Key features of the Montessori Preschool approach to education are:
1.
The Montessori preschool classroom is carefully planned and filled
with special, self-correcting materials for hands-on use by the
children.
2.
The teacher is specially trained to observe the children’s
interests and to direct them toward the lessons that meet their
individual stages of development.
3.
The program and curriculum are designed to allow each child the
opportunity to learn when he/she is most ready, and they place no
constraints on his/her ability to do so.
4.
Each lesson builds upon the knowledge acquired through earlier
lessons, moving gradually from concrete to more abstract levels of
thought and understanding.
5.
The child gains a sense of control over himself and his environment
through the successful completion of ‘work’ (play) that is
personally meaningful.
